Learn How To Make A Model Of A Sailing Ship – And – Put It In A Bottle!
The bottle is not cut in half
The bottle is not formed after the model is made.
The bottle end is not cut and joined again by melting nylon rope and putting that over the cut.
This DVD will show how you too, can make a model of a ship and put it in a bottle, no magic, no tricks, the real thing.

Hello and welcome to my world of making sailing ships in bottles.
My name is Rod Mills and I have been making sailing ships in bottles for almost as long as I can remember and I can remember a lot of years. I wanted to ensure that this craft was not lost to future generations.
Firstly I wrote a book, How To Make Sailing Ships In Bottles, that I wanted given away free to every school, education establishment and public library.
There are not many people out there with the experience I have had making ships in bottles.
I really want to pass on this interest to people (especially young people), and see this practice carried on to future generations.
Over the years of teaching this subject in schools, homes, markets and maritime institutions, thousands of people in Australia have been shown these simple procedures of how to make sailing ships in bottles.
I have to presume that it was the ‘hands-on’ experience in front of them, that made the knowledge easier to learn.
Then people started asking me if there was a DVD available.
They wanted a DVD that showed how to do this in a ’step by step’ process.
Teachers from many schools contacted me, asking if I made a DVD of what I had taught in their classes. They wanted to be able to continue the instructions to other classes, letting me take over the class for 40 minutes, via a DVD.
A simple, visual demonstration of the procedures I had created to make sailing ships in bottles.
So I thought “why haven’t I made a DVD?”
My next step was to contact a friend in TV production.
The preparation and the planning started, about 5 weeks of preparation and planning.
The filming was not straight forward, lots of stopping and starting and a whole lot of thought…breaking it down to a logical order allowing the sequences to fit properly so that anybody ( and I really mean a-n-y-b-o-d-y! I have seen a 7 year old’s model who has mastered it! ) can follow without too much difficulty.
I took pains to visually plan the whole lesson so that classes would understand the procedure easily.
It wasn’t straightforward filming ‘doing it cold,’ as the natural teaching flow in the classroom workshops was always peppered with questions and queries from students.
This was all planned with the beginner in mind, the ability to rewind or fast forward as they wanted and not lose the process.
The filming took 4 long days but finally the DVD was finished and……
It Looked GOOD!!
My first critic was a friend, (a friend who would tell me exactly what’s what, no holding back and being nice)……
This was the reply after watching the DVD, “Why haven’t you done this before? I never really understood how you did that. But with a couple of hours of watching your DVD and a bit of practice I reckon I could have it down pat. Is it really THAT simple?”
The truth is, yes it is. It’s THAT simple.
So now you too can learn how to make sailing ships in bottles with my DVD.
The book I have written is free to all who would like to take a look at this craft, you can download the ebook here.
The DVD you can purchase through our safe and secure ordering process, we require your shipping/mailing address at the time of purchase so we can send you the DVD.
This DVD can be your gateway to a whole new career.
Once you learn the ’so easy process’ I teach in the DVD, you can do what I have done, set up workshops in schools, markets, maritime museum. Not only run workshops but successfully sell your ’sailing ships in bottles’ creations.
Looking for a new hobby?
Then there is nothing more satisfying than making something that is unique and made with your own hands and believe me, it is easier than you think, get the DVD, watch the DVD.
The interest in this craft is huge, whenever I set up a workshop there is always a queue of people waiting to sign up for the lessons, 50 plus people lined up with dollars in hand and very happy to part with them, is not unusual and that is the first day. The school workshops are the same, the fascination that is there for making sailing ships in bottles is enormous.
Just doing the workshops is so satisfying especially when you get feedback like this.
Here is what others have to say
KATHERINE SCHOOL OF THE AIR, NT – AUSTRALIA
To Rod Mills, Australian Master Mini Shipbuilder-
Dear Rod, I am writing on behalf of the staff, students and parents of the Litchfield, Kakadu and Gregory Regions to express our appreciation in attending these Mini Schools and passing on the many, many skills and knowledge involved in your specialized craft to our students and the adults present. The traditional skills involved in building ships in bottles is waning in our society and bypassing this generation. In many instances these skills are unheard of and as such it was perhaps a once in a lifetime chance for our students to experience this craft. Our students really appreciate it when experts such as yourself give of themselves in both knowledge and time and travel. Thank you, Jenny
OURIMBAH PUBLIC SCHOOL, NSW
Rod Mills visited our school with his amazing array of ‘Ships in Bottles’ in all shapes and sizes – all made by himself. He learnt his trade in the English Merchant Navy during the late 40’s and 50’s – a very talented craftsman who demonstrated the various processes to our school. The children and staff were enthralled by his wonderful skills and presentation – so much that many of them made their models at school the next day.
These were a result of the workshops he conducted while he was here. We thoroughly endorse and recommend Rod Mills to all schools in Australia as an educational classroom activity and entertainment program for teachers who wish to educate children of this little known art. Marie A. Principal

Dear Rod, On behalf of the Enrichment Workshop Co-ordinating Committee I would like to thank you for participating in the workshop Ship Ahoy! in our October series. Your contribution towards making this Enrichment Workshop series a success is really appreciated. Kind Regards, Ros Jones
